How in the world do we keep finding these incredible humans?!
Today was one of those days where I walked out of an appointment and just thought, How in the world do we keep finding these incredible humans?!
We traveled to meet with yet another phenomenal orthopedic surgeon — this one specializing in adult limb differences and complex deformities after trauma — and I genuinely don’t know how to articulate how well this appointment went. This orthopedic trauma recovery journey has introduced us to some truly incredible people.
Before we even walked through his door, Dr. Warner had spent the weekend talking with my surgeon in Hawaiʻi and combing through surgery notes from North Carolina so he could fully understand everything these legs have been through.
Like … WHAT?! Who does that?!
He did his homework. He talked to the people who have operated on me. He studied the surgeries, the hardware, the complications, and my history.
We spent so much time going through both options: shortening my left leg or lengthening my right. Neither is simple. Neither is easy. And thanks to the impressive amount of hardware currently living in my body, both come with some pretty significant challenges.
So basically … there is no easy option.
We laughed. We cried. We asked a million questions, and he answered them. We talked through possibilities, risks, fears, and what life could look like on the other side of this — or if I don’t do it at all.
Let me just tell you: Dr. Warner was incredible.
He is knowledgeable. He is passionate. He is SO freaking smart. He made jokes and recognized how much pain I’ve been through. It truly felt like we’ve been friends forever.
On paper, surgery could be beneficial, but there are still a lot of unknowns. So, he’s going to bring in other doctors to continue the conversation and make sure we’re looking at this from every possible angle.
I am honestly at a loss for words. This appointment went better than I could have imagined. Let’s be honest — I overthink everything and had been preparing for the worst — so I’ll be riding this high for a while.
Having a good medical team truly means the WORLD to me.
While we still have a lot of decisions to make and pray over, I’ll never stop being grateful for the people God continues to place in our lives.
